Where design meets function – an IMD solution for smart room control

MICHEL ITC developed a bespoke HMI solution using the in-mould decoration (IMD) process for Climeo’s RoomMaster control unit. This made it possible to incorporate a three-dimensional shape, a high-quality finish, a robust surface and an integrated e-ink display into a single, sturdy composite unit in a space-saving design.

How can a high-quality appearance, intuitive operation and a compact design be combined in a single control unit? It was precisely this question that formed the focus of our collaboration with Climeo, the Swiss start-up behind the innovative ‘Indoor Climate System’.

For the RoomMaster control unit, the aim was to create a control solution that not only impressed technically but also complemented the modern interior design concept. The distinctive three-dimensional shape, the integrated eInk display and the desired gloss effect placed high demands on design, materials and manufacturing.

Our solution

A customised operating foil using the in-mould decoration process. This involves moulding, decorating and adding functionality to the plastic part in a single step. The result is a stable, high-quality composite with a robust surface, precisely executed design elements and optimal integration of the display – even in confined spaces.

Together with our vF partner Design Engineering Zurich, we were able to support Climeo from the initial idea through to a workable solution. The project demonstrates how design freedom, functionality and efficient manufacturing can be combined in a well-thought-out HMI solution.

Today, the RoomMaster ensures that temperature and air supply can be individually controlled for each room – conveniently, intuitively and at the touch of a button.
